I Wanted Earbuds That Wouldn’t Make Me Feel Ambushed

I’ve never been able to zone out with regular earbuds, the moment I can’t hear what’s around me, I’m on edge instead of relaxed. That’s what pushed me toward open-ear, and eventually toward the Baseus Inspire XC1 clip-on earbuds. I wore them through two hours of cleaning, a run of podcasts, and general mom chaos, here’s what actually held up.

Open air just means you can still hear your surroundings while the music plays. You’re not sealed off from the world. For me that’s the whole point.

What They Are And How They Sit

These clip on around your ear instead of going inside it. The ones I had before that hooked over my ears used to make my ears hurt after I wore them a long time, and the in-ear ones always felt like they put strain on my ears too. Sometimes my ears would just push those right out and they’d fall. These don’t do that. They go around the ear and sit there, and when you play music, they work great.

The sound is backed by Bose. Bose or Boss, I don’t know how to pronounce it, but the sound quality is really good. On paper there’s a hybrid 2-way driver, Dolby spatial audio, and they’re IP66-rated for water resistance. They say they’re supposed to last up to 40 hours so you don’t have to charge them every day. I have not tested them for 40 hours straight, so I can’t confirm that number, but I’ll tell you what I did test below.

Two Hours Of Cleaning And I Never Missed A Thing

I tested them for 2 hours straight and they played well the whole time. I listened to podcasts and music while I was cleaning, and I could hear it all loud and clear. But here’s the part that sold me. My daughter called me from the other room and I heard her, so I knew what was going on in the house. That’s exactly what I wanted. Not completely noise cancelling.

Two hours of podcasts and music without any ear soreness, that alone beats every hook-over pair I’ve tried. The audio isn’t studio-flat, but it’s full enough that I wasn’t reaching for the volume button, even while vacuuming.

The Missing Battery Indicator Is A Real Downfall

There’s nothing that tells you how charged they are. That would be a downfall for me. The earbuds snap into the case with magnets, the case closes, and they charge in there, which is easy. But the case has no light or display telling you the charge level, so you’re kind of guessing. When you’re used to seeing a percentage or a little dot, its absence stands out.

It comes with a USB-C charging cable but no wall cube. Not a deal-breaker for me because we have tons of Type-C chargers lying around, so we just plug it into one of those. But if you don’t have spares, just be known you’ll need one.

Who These Make Sense For

The through-line for every good use case here is awareness, you need your music and your surroundings at the same time. Jogging solo on a street with traffic, cleaning while kids roam the house, walking the dog: situations where sealing off your ears is actually a liability, not a feature.

They’re also nice and small and compact, but the earbuds are big enough that you’re not going to lose them. That matters to me. I got my husband some that go in the ear and he lost them like two weeks in, so losing tiny buds is always a concern in this house. And the case is a nice size that fits in your pocket.

If you’re looking for noise cancelling earbuds, these are not the ones to get. I want to be really clear about that. I save my noise cancelling pair for when I’m on an airplane, or when I’m traveling in the car with the family and I just want to put them in and cancel out everything.

These are the opposite by design. You will hear what’s going on around you, and that’s the point. So it’s less “which is better” and more “which situation are you in.” Cleaning, jogging, keeping an ear on the kids? The Baseus. Flight where you want to disappear into silence? Your noise cancelling ones win there, no contest.

Setup Tips And What I’d Tell A Buyer

Pairing was very easy. I just opened the case and that let it know it was ready to start pairing, then I paired it with my phone and it was easy to find. No fighting with it. There’s also a little button on the earbud so you can answer calls and all that stuff.

I have not gone into the app myself, but there is an app you can download to change settings and dial in the sound quality if you’re into that level of detail. If you like tweaking your audio, that’s there for you. And since there’s no charge indicator, I’d just get in the habit of tossing them in the case at night so you’re never caught off guard on battery.
